HOW VSP DESIGNED A THERMAL IMAGING SOLUTION TO PROTECT LARGE BUSINESS DURING PANDEMIC

Businesses worldwide have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 virus. Detecting the spread of this virus is vital for businesses to be able to operate in a safe and secure environment. The use of thermal imaging can assist in detecting elevated temperatures.

VSP designed a solution ultising MOBOTIX thermal cameras. The system effectively detected and notified evaluated temperatures on multiple occasions.

Please note: MOBOTIX Thermal Cameras are not TGA approved and should be used as a guide online.

VSP supplied thermal cameras during the pandemic to a large processing and manufacturing facility in Melbourne.
The client, who employs hundreds of staff wanted to safely continue operations despite the growing concerns
of the virus. They wanted to use the latest technology to protect their staff’s health and wellbeing and prevent
closure of their factory.

As this is not TGA certified technology, the thermal cameras were being used as a first point of screening
of all visitors and staff at vital entry points into the facility. In order for the new system to be effective, any
measurements outside of the set system tolerance would generate immediate alerts via email, which included
optical images for immediate manual temperature verification. All thermal and optical footage is archived to allow
for effective contact tracing in the event of an outbreak. The MOBOTIX M16TB cameras were used as an indicator
of elevated temperatures. In the event of a detection by the camera, the person was then further tested using a
TGA approved device.

Given the wide variety of deployment environments together with high volumes of staff over long operational
hours, a disparate range of custom rules via NX Witness and MOBOTIX custom rule platforms, external sensors
and calibration devices were used to achieve effective and prolonged accurate thermal detections that were
regularly checked and evaluated.

Thermal radiometric screening of all staff that passed through high traffic walkways and corridors was deployed.
Detection locations and sensor angles were carefully selected to offer fields of views that included the inner ear
& medial canthus for the greatest measurement accuracy. PVC curtains and Airlocks also played a significant role
in mitigating external heat sources that may generate false alarms or obscure accurate readings.

The project outcome was successful in allowing multiple facilities to continue operation while protecting their
staff. The system effectively detected and notified evaluated temperatures on multiple occasions.
