How Hikvision Restored Security at Runaway Bay Marina After Cyclone Damage

Date: 15-08-2025

Enhancing Security at Runaway Bay Marina with Hikvision’s Marine-Grade CCTV

Runaway Bay Marina, located on Queensland’s Gold Coast, is one of the state’s premier marine facilities, offering world-class mooring, maintenance, and leisure services. As a bustling hub for tourists, yacht owners, and local businesses, the Marina’s commitment to safety and security is paramount. When a powerful cyclone struck the region, the Marina’s existing CCTV system was completely destroyed, leaving the site without active surveillance during a critical recovery period. This sudden loss exposed the facility to risks such as unmonitored access to restricted dock areas, increased incidents of vandalism and petty theft, and a lack of visibility for incident investigation.

Adding to the challenge, 90% of the Marina’s cabling is located underwater, making traditional re-cabling impossible. Any new security solution needed to not only restore full coverage but also deliver marine-grade durability to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The system had to be future-ready, corrosion-resistant, and capable of delivering reliable performance in all weather conditions.

SOLUTIONS

Hikvision partnered with installer In Connect Pty Ltd to design and deliver a fully customised CCTV system that addressed the Marina’s complex operational and environmental requirements. Leveraging Hikvision’s high-performance technology, the solution combined advanced video surveillance with intelligent functionality, ensuring the Marina could maintain round-the-clock visibility and rapid response capabilities.

The design incorporated a 64-channel Hikvision NVR to provide centralised management and more than 32 Hikvision 8MP ColorVu Hybrid Cameras, including bullet and turret models with built-in microphones, strobe lights, and motorised lenses. Powered by Hikvision’s DarkFighter technology, the cameras now deliver exceptional low-light performance, enabling clear and accurate imaging even at night. Hikvision PoE Smart Switches ensure stable power and data delivery, while Western Digital Purple Surveillance HDDs provide robust, high-capacity storage for reliable video retention. To combat the corrosive marine environment, custom waterproof stainless-steel mounts and junction boxes were installed, ensuring long-term system integrity. Given the impossibility of laying new underwater cables, a wireless Point-to-Point (PtP) network was implemented to link cameras seamlessly across the Marina without disruption.

Results

The new Hikvision CCTV system has restored full surveillance coverage at Runaway Bay Marina and elevated overall security capabilities. The site now benefits from high-definition video quality, enhanced night vision, intelligent alert features, and easy remote management. With marine-grade hardware ensuring durability and a wireless network overcoming the limitations of underwater cabling, the Marina is now equipped with a robust, future-ready security platform designed to perform in the most demanding conditions.
